The cold wind plays and sways the tops of trees
The winter evergreens dull ‘gainst the mists
Grey sky envelops even greyer world
And rain, out of ideas, falls boringly.
Winter must be endured till far-off Spring
Though snowdrops burst already their white domes
Green shoots give promise of the daffodils
But cozy fire lulls me back inside.
A fireplace is like a mother’s breast
Bosom unlike another place on earth
The crackle, smell, the warm envelopment
Invites you suckle, settle, stay, repose.
Your presence is to me like winter’s rest
Of all the loves that warm, yours is the best.
