A playthrough of Milton Bradley's 1989 sports game for the NES, World Games.
World Games, a port of the 1986 Commodore 64 game of the same name, was the fourth title in Epyx' series of themed multi-event sports games. It was the second of three games in the series to be released for the NES, falling between Winter Games ( • Winter Games (NES) Playthrough ) and California Games ( • California Games (NES) Playthrough - Ninte... ).
Instead of focusing on Olympic events, World Games offers up a slate of eight games typically associated with specific places and cultures. These include cliff diving (Mexico), sumo wrestling (Japan), bull riding (USA), barrel jumping (Germany), log rolling (Canada), slalom skiing (France), the caber toss (Scotland), and weight lifting (USSR).
Each game has its own unique mechanics and control scheme - reading the manual is highly recommended - and they all have tricks and nuances that make them fun to learn over the course of repeated plays. None of it is particularly deep, but the multiplayer component gives the game a lot of replay value.
Like California Games, a lot of World Games' appeal comes from the varied presentation. Every event gets its own venue, music, and character animations, and everything looks and sounds pretty nice. I especially liked the Mario and Luigi lookalikes in the log roll and the music used for the caber toss. Just check out how well they recreated the sound of bagpipes with the NES hardware!
And finally, I think it bears mentioning that Rare didn't port World Games to the NES. Though they are credited on the copyright screen, Rare farmed the project out to Software Creations, which explains why the game doesn't line up with Rare's typical house-style.
World Games was a great weekend rental for anyone looking for some 8-bit multiplayer fun back in the late 80s, and I think it's still well worth the few bucks a copy goes for nowadays.
