Join me on an unforgettable journey to Karen Valley, a remote and breathtaking region in Kashmir, bordering Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). This wasn't your typical tourist trip! I set out on my bike, aiming to reach the very edge of India, but the challenges were immense.
From the moment I entered Kupwara district, the security presence was palpable. Massive Indian Army convoys rolled by, and every 100 meters, CRPF, BSF, and J&K Police stood guard. The closer I got to Kupwara, the tighter the security became.
My mission: to secure the crucial permission from Kralpora Police Station to visit Karen Valley. But the intense snowfall had turned the roads treacherous, and I was initially denied. To add to my woes, a heavy downpour started, forcing me to retreat to Kupwara. I checked into Raj Residency, the town's supposed "best" hotel, only to find a freezing room with no heater!
Two days of waiting, braving the biting cold, and hoping for a break in the weather. I even ventured into the local Kupwara market, capturing unique sights you won't want to miss. Finally, a glimmer of hope! A Kupwara Sumo driver announced a trip to Karen. I secured my spot, left my bike at the hotel, and headed to the Sumo stand – the lifeline of mountain transport in Kashmir.
Back at Kralpora Police Station, I faced another hurdle. Permission was again denied due to the risky winter conditions. Only by having my driver vouch for me as a suriety, I was granted a 24-hour pass! I needed seven copies of this permission, one for each of the seven army and BSF checkpoints along the way.
The journey to Karen was a true test of endurance. Mountainous roads, treacherous snow, and constant scrutiny at each checkpoint. We even had to put chains on the Sumo's wheels to navigate the icy terrain. But the landscapes were simply stunning – snow-clad mountains stretching as far as the eye could see.
Finally, after a grueling but exhilarating ride, I reached Karen village. Even here, the final army post subjected me to thorough checks before allowing me entry.
This video documents the raw, unfiltered experience of traveling to one of India's most sensitive and beautiful border regions. Join me as I navigate security, weather, and the sheer adventure of reaching Karen Valley!
