This event features distinguished speakers who have dedicated their careers to championing these fundamental pillars of democracy and knowledge dissemination: Robert French AC, Peter Greste, and Pnina Levine.

Chancellor Robert French AM, a graduate of UWA, has served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. The French Model Code, to which Australian universities are aligned, is the result of his 2019 Review of Freedom of Speech in Australian Higher Education Providers.

Professor Peter Greste, an Australian foreign correspondent, was arrested on terrorism charges in Cairo in 2013. He was convicted and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. After winning his freedom he went on to champion press freedom around the world.

Pnina Levine, also a graduate of UWA, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and a PhD candidate at Curtin University. Her research is focused on the protection of academic freedom and freedom of speech.

On 02 November, UWA Public Policy Institute Director Paul Maginn, Forrest Research Foundation Director James Arvanitakis welcomed a diverse audience of academics and members of the public to the second of the collaborative Policy Taboo Series.

Co-hosted by Forrest Research Foundation, Nicole Feast, and moderated by UWA Public Policy Institute Director Assoc. Prof. Paul J. Maginn, the event was sure to leave the audience considering the restraints, truths, and facts of academic and media freedom in Australia.
