On May 26, 1941, fifteen Fairey Swordfish launched from HMS Ark Royal into a Force 8 gale. Their target had just destroyed HMS Hood and was escaping toward France. Flying at 139 mph with open cockpits and canvas wings, they attacked through a wall of anti-aircraft fire. One torpedo hit the stern. The rudders jammed. The most powerful battleship ever built could only steam in circles.
Not a single Swordfish was shot down. One returned with 175 holes in its wings.
From Taranto to the Atlantic U-boat war, the Swordfish sank more Axis shipping than any other Allied aircraft — and outlasted the aircraft designed to replace it.
