On September 18, 1946, a Sabena Airlines DC-4 aircraft crashed about 35km southwest of Gander, Newfoundland. The plane was flying from Brussels to New York, with stops in Shannon and Gander. Due to poor weather conditions, the pilot to misjudged the landing for Gander International Airport. Tragically, 27 of the 44 people on board lost their lives, but thanks to the remarkable rescue efforts, 17 survivors were saved from the crash. A small cemetery was established at the crash site, known as St. Martin-in-the-Woods, in honour of Dr. Samuel P. Martin, who worked tirelessly treating victims on scene. This was the first time helicopters were used in a civilian aviation rescue in Newfoundland.
My parents, girlfriend, two dogs, and I left from our family cabin in Gambo, NL and drove to the site on ATV. Enjoy this short video of some beautiful scenery, the crash site, and a quick boil up
