Comparing Total Potential CBD and THC Over Time
Total CBD and total THC accumulation curves for the 30 cultivars.
Most cultivars accumulate high levels of cannabinoids by week 2 or 3.
Top 10cm of shoot tips were sampled and cannabinoids were quantified using HPLC.
*Across most cultivars studies the CBD and THC trends seem to be similar, but there are a few standouts…
Two Cultivars Umpqua and Deschutes
The two cultivars Umpqua and Deschutes, peak their CBD levels before THC reaches its maximum levels. *But both produce THC levels above the 0.3% threshold.
Most Will Exceed 0.3% Total THC
However, this is notable that in some cultivars it is possible for THC levels to increase in the later weeks into flower
Not in this case, but in other cultivars that may be close to the 0.3% threshold, this could be notable observation.

Where Are Cannabinoid Accumulated?
Cannabinoids are synthesized and accumulate in unfertilized female inflorescence specifically the trichomes that are found on the surface of the inflorescence and the leaves.
Biosynthetic Schema for Cannabinoids
The enzymes and many genes for the pathway have been isolated and characterized.
Novel polyketide cyclase for the synthesis of olivetolic acid Prenyl transferase, also called cannabigerolic acid synthase, that produces the central precursor cannabigerolic acid (CBGA)
The specific synthases for the production of THCA, cannabidolic acid (CBDA) and cannabichromenic acid (CBCA) have also been characterized.
Based on inheritance of chemical phenotypes, the genes for THCA synthase (THCAS) and CBDA synthase (CBDAS) are considered co-dominant alleles
The gene for CBCA synthase is an independent locus.
However, based on DNA sequencing and analysis of the transcripts expressed in marijuana and hemp samples, multiple linked loci for the THCAS and CBDAS genes are proposed.
There are published genomes for Cannabis, and the genetic diversity for the biosynthetic pathway of cannabinoids in both marijuana and hemp strains is under investigation
Bioactive Forms of Cannabinoids
The bioactive forms of the cannabinoids are produced following a light or heat induced decarboxylation reaction to generate cannabigerol (CBG), Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), cannabidiol (CBD) or cannabichromene (CBC).
