A spellbinding original Tarana in Raga Bhairavi, rooted in Hindustani classical vocal tradition and reimagined through a Jazz Fusion lens. Composed by Bijayashree Samal and arranged collaboratively by Bijayashree Samal and Moshe Elmakias, this piece brings Indian classical vocals into dialogue with expressive jazz piano.

Intricate rhythmic phrasing from the classical form meets the harmonic freedom and improvisational spirit of jazz, creating a fluid, cross-cultural soundscape that feels both timeless and contemporary — a musical conversation where tradition and modernity move together.

Background Story

This composition was first performed by Moshe and I in concert in Geneva on October 8, 2023. What began as an exploration between voice and piano turned into an unforgettable evening. The audience response was overwhelming — warm, curious, and deeply engaged. Many listeners approached us afterward asking where they could find the CD.

At that time, there wasn’t one.
That concert became the catalyst. Encouraged by the phenomenal response, we decided to formally record the piece and include it in our upcoming album.

Geneva Scents
The subtitle reflects both place and atmosphere. “Geneva Scents” evokes something subtle yet enduring — like fragrance in the air, or the lingering memory of its first celebration by the people of Geneva. It carries the warmth of their embrace, the generosity of their listening, and the spirit of that unforgettable evening.

From Geneva to Berlin
''Geneva Scents'' was officially recorded in February 2024 at Tricone Studios, Berlin by Francis Stuart Milne and the visual dimension of the project was captured and shaped bySinging River Films.

About the artists:
Bijayashree Samal — Indian singer‑composer celebrated for her soulful, melodious voice and expressive musicality. A Doctorate in Chemistry and a graded artist of All India Radio, she skilfully blends original Hindustani classical and semi‑classical compositions with jazz and other world music idioms. She is also the founder of the Indian spiced jazz/world music ensemble Nandighosha, performing internationally and collaborating with acclaimed musicians across genres besides teaching music.

Moshe Elmakias — Israeli jazz pianist and composer with a virtuosic, expressive style. He studied classical and jazz performance at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and later earned a Master’s at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Based in New York, Moshe has been performing at major jazz festivals and collaborating with renowned artists across jazz and world music scenes.
