Robert Schumann was fascinated by the Orient and set several poems from Goethe's West-Eastern Divan to music. Bilder aus Osten reflects the stories of the Iraqi poet Hariri (1054-1122). Abu Seid, the hero of the book, is an eulenspiegel-like figure. In this work, Schumann may be referring to the complexity of the form rather than a melodic approach. The contrasting characters of Florestan and Eusebius, created by Schumann, can also be found in the six pieces.
