Type “phone charger” into Amazon, and the page looks like a store.
But behind every search result is an advertising auction. Sellers bid for visibility, Amazon controls the marketplace, and the products shoppers see first may not be there by accident.
In 2025, Amazon generated approximately $68.6 billion from advertising services. Then, on August 31, 2026, the Federal Trade Commission and 22 states sued Amazon, alleging that undisclosed pricing adjustments inflated the cost of its advertising auctions.
Amazon strongly denies the allegations, argues that relevance improves advertising results, and calls the lawsuit misguided. The case remains pending, and the allegations have not been proven in court.
This documentary investigates:
• How Amazon’s advertising auctions work
• Why sellers pay for visibility
• The difference between first-price and second-price auctions
• What the FTC calls a “soft reserve price”
• How Amazon built a $68.6 billion advertising business
• Who ultimately pays for promoted placement
