As this was a slow line service it took just over an hour to complete the journey from Northampton to London, there are faster services from Northampton to London which usually start from Birmingham New Street which take less than an hour to London. Most services from Northampton are LNWR operated however Avanti West Coast operated very limited number of services via Northampton.

Even though this was a stopping service it did not call at all stops along the route as some stations are either served by the Tring/Milton Keynes stoppers or Southern services. This service called at Wolverton, Milton Keynes Central, Bletchley, Leighton Buzzard, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and Watford Junction. Most stations between Watford Junction and London Euston (Watford DC line) are only served by the London Overground and the Underground Bakerloo line, which runs alongside the WCML forming a 6 track section for most of the southern part of this route.

All LNWR services through Northampton are formed of class 350 Desiros in either 4, 8 or 12 carriage formations,. Unlike the Avanti Pendolinos and Voyagers which have a top speed of 125mph the LNWR services (even on the fast lines) have a top speed of 110mph meaning they always have a slightly longer journey time than the intercity services along the West Coast Main Line.
