In 30 years, he spent so much time up in the yard cranes at Keppel Terminal, that he'd talk to them like a "girlfriend". And they'd "sing" to him their different songs.
But with change sweeping Singapore's port, 53-year-old Lim Chin Chye knew he had to let go and embrace the new, automated future. With help from Workforce Singapore's Professional Conversion Programme (PCP), the self-professed tech "dinosaur" was retrained to work in the automated crane control room at PSA's Pasir Panjang Terminal.
From 2021 to 2040, all of PSA's container operations will be progressively consolidated at the Tuas mega port, which will be the world's largest fully-automated port once completed.
The PCP scheme, which comes under WSG's Adapt And Grow initiative, has offered some 100 PCPs since its inception, to help mid-career PMETs reskill for roles in sectors with good prospects.
