Originally built as a temple, this extraordinarily impressive monument was converted into a Christian church in the winter of 609. The breathtaking façade of this huge building still bears reference to its builder today. Marcus Agrippa had the temple completed in 27 BC. Over the course of history, the Pantheon suffered numerous setbacks.

After a major fire devastated the city of Rome in 80 AD, Emperor Domitian had the building reconstructed and restored. A lightning strike and a resulting second fire damaged the Pantheon again just 30 years later. The building you see today dates from 120–125 AD. Emperor Hadrian had the Pantheon rebuilt in this form. Surprisingly, he referred to the original builder of the whole structure with the huge Latin inscription “M.AGRIPPA.L.F.COS.TERTIUM.FECIT.”
