As part of an ongoing Habitat Enhancement Program for Lake Conroe, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the San Jacinto River Authority have partnered with other local entities to place over 500 fish attractors in Lake Conroe.
Partners in the program include the US Army Corp of Engineers, Texas Black Bass Unlimited, Seven Coves Bass Club, and the Bass Anglers Sportsman's Society.
Members of the Seven Coves Bass Club, SJRA employees, and volunteer anglers constructed fish attractors consisting of concrete cinder blocks, plastic tubing, and bamboo cane using monies from grants provided by the National Reservoir Fish Habitat Partnership. The structures are designed to mimic natural fish habitat by providing cover for juvenile fish species and supporting algae growth as a food source for bait fish. The grants were funded by Bass Pro Shops and the Texas Toyota Bass Classic and allowed volunteers to construct nearly 900 structures. The first 500 structures will be placed in four separate one-acre "hot spots" around the south end of the lake to provide enhanced fishing opportunities to the angling public and will ultimately be marked with appropriate buoys. The remaining 400 structures will be placed during the fall.
The various partners in the program have been working together for over 15 years to improve fish habitat through numerous projects including the planting of native vegetation in Lake Conroe.
