Women often think that dilation during treatment of vaginismus actually stretches out the vaginal walls. In reality, dilation for vaginismus only alters the perception of vaginal expansion/stretch, and trains to not 'brace for impact' upon penetration by clenching the vagina.
Physical stretching of the vagina is typically limited to the woman who underwent vaginal surgery, or was treated for female cancer, or is in menopause, all of which compromise the elasticity of the vagina.
