Plantera is the jungle boss, and her death unlocks the temple and the hardmode dungeon. I consider her the hardest boss in the game.

BATTLE EXPLANATION
--------------------------------------
THE BATTLEGROUND:
If you don't want to excavate an arena, Plantera's first form can be fought in a relatively small space, and her second form can be fought while running through the jungle caves.
If you prefer having an arena, you'll need a lot of room to move properly around Plantera.
Find or dig an area of considerable size and then enclose it to stop mobs from entering during the fight.
Don't make the arena too big or it'll stop counting as jungle and Plantera will enrage.
You want to have one wooden platform in the middle. This platform wont let Plantera's Spiky Balls reach you.
A second platform may be built near the ground, so when the Spiky Balls stop bouncing you won't run into them.
Place enough Campfires, Heart Lanterns and/or Stars in Bottles to cover the zone.
STRATEGY:
Just a heads up, Plantera is much harder than the mechanical trio, so dying more than usual should be expected.
Plantera uses her vine hooks to move around. The hooks themselves are a hazard, but Plantera doesn't use them to attack actively. Keep an eye on them if she moves, because they deal good damage.
During her first phase, she will creep towards you, but she's slow so unless you stop moving she won't catch you.
One of her attacks is spitting seeds. There are two variants, a purple one and a green, poisonus one. Although these proyectiles are slow, Plantera will fire them faster as her health lowers. To avoid this attack, stay near the middle platform, and fly in circles around her or make an arc pattern above her. If you slow down or you need to change directions, use the shield dash to pass between the seeds.
Her other attack is launching Spiky Balls. These are quite harmful and have a slight homing ability. If you don't drop to the bottom of the arena, you can largely ignore them because they fall through platforms.
After you remove half of her HP, Plantera will enter her second form, and now is when things get tough; her speed and damage increases, and several Tentacles will spawn attached to her body and hooks. However, she'll stop firing seeds and Spiky Balls.
Since Spiky Balls are no longer a threat, you can use the entire arena now. Fly away from the boss in circles and get out of the Tentacle's reach. Staying between Plantera and the Tentacles is not as bad as it sounds, because the Tentacles have a hard time retracting. If you get surrounded, look for gaps to dash through, drop down or use your grappling hook.
The Tentacles don't respawn, so take them down first to give yourself breathing room.
Plantera also will start shooting some flower-like proyectiles. This can be destroyed and move downwards.
EQUIPMENT AND SPECIFIC STRATEGY:
Boots, wings and the Shield of Cthulhu are mandatory to navigate around Plantera. The remaining accesories can be anything that matches your playstile, but damage boosting reforges and accessories are recommended.
I've swapped the Obsidian Shield for more damage, but to be honest, knoback immunity helps a lot when you get cornered.
As a Mage, your defense is not going to hold up against Plantera, so you need to get some dodging skills and finish the job as soon as posssible.
If you don't like using Mana Potions because of the Mana Sickness debuff, drink Mana Regeneration Potions and don't let your mana reach 0. Stop attacking for a couple of seconds and your mana will be refilled.
Plantera moves slowly during her first phase, so fast magic works well, even if it's not that powerful. The Shadowflame Hex Doll, Crystal Storm and Meteor Staff are some of your options.
The Tentacles and Hooks during the second phase will wreck you easily. Use piercing magic to get rid of several of them simultaneously. The Magical Harp excels here because of its infinite pierce and bouncing capabilities. The Venom Staff drains a lot of mana but carries out the job. The Crystal Serpent might be viable if you want to focus directly on the body.
The Unholy Trident is hard to get and mana expensive, but its high damage and piercing make up for it.
Plantera is immune to Poison, so don't rely on the Poison Staff debuff to increase your DPS.
If your world has crimson, bring a Golden Shower to lower Plantera's defense.
As always, bring all the relevant buff potions that are available, specially Magic Power and Mana Regeneration Potions.
