Why Shrimp DIE Months After An Aquarium Looks Perfect

TDS drift is a common but often overlooked cause of unexplained losses in aquarium shrimp tanks. TDS, or total dissolved solids, measures the combined concentration of minerals, organic compounds, and dissolved substances in aquarium water. Over time, TDS can slowly rise as uneaten shrimp food decomposes, waste accumulates, plants break down, botanicals release compounds, and fertilizers or additives introduce additional dissolved material. One of the most common causes of TDS drift occurs when evaporated water is topped off with tap water or remineralized water instead of pure RO or distilled water. Because evaporation removes only water and leaves minerals behind, repeatedly topping off with mineral-containing water causes TDS to gradually increase week after week. This slow rise creates osmotic stress for shrimp, forcing them to constantly regulate internal water and mineral balance, which can weaken shrimp, disrupt molting, reduce breeding success, and shorten lifespan. Unlike sudden water parameter swings, TDS drift develops slowly and shrimp may survive for months while gradually declining, making the true cause difficult to identify. Preventing TDS drift involves topping off evaporation with pure water, monitoring long-term trends with a TDS meter, maintaining consistent remineralization when using RO water, and performing controlled water changes to keep aquarium shrimp within a stable and predictable TDS range.
