Hot water cylinder leaking due to poor installation. We had to act fast to prevent further damage!

We attended an urgent call-out earlier this week and this is what we found. Water was coming through the ceiling and pooling on the kitchen floor, caused by the the expansion vessel of the hot water cylinder on the floor above. The expansion vessel was found to be full of water which had a knock-on effect across the whole system, highlighting existing installation issues. When the hot water was turned on the water had nowhere to expand into, thereby causing the cylinder to discharge. Due to the poorly installed discharge pipework, the water was able to escape the pipework onto the floor and ultimately into the room below.
The existing pipe had been run into an old plastic overflow and has fittings on it that are not soldered. The pipework was not installed to building regulations and the quality of the installation was generally poor.
