Once glorious under kings like Khosrow Anushirvan, the empire weakened through internal strife, arrogance, and betrayal. Yazdegerd III, the last Sassanid king, could not resist the tide of history. With his downfall, an ancient era ended, and Persia entered a new chapter.
در شاهنامه فردوسی، واپسین بخش به سقوط سلسله ساسانیان می‌پردازد؛ آخرین امپراتوری بزرگ ایران پیش از فتح عرب. این شاهنشاهی که روزی با خسرو انوشیروان در اوج شکوه بود، به سبب اختلافات درونی، غرور و خیانت‌ها تضعیف شد. یزدگرد سوم، واپسین شاه ساسانی، نتوانست در برابر سیلاب تاریخ ایستادگی کند. با سقوط او، عصری کهن پایان یافت و ایران وارد فصلی نو گردید.
