Driving from Jamnagar to Dwarka, it is hard to miss the large shimmering patches of white on both sides of the road. These are salt pans – man-made shallow ponds where seawater is allowed to collect and evaporate, leaving behind pure, glistening salt.
How Salt is Made Here
The process is simple but labour-intensive:
Sea Water Intake – Water from the Arabian Sea is let into flat coastal land through small canals.
Evaporation – Under Gujarat’s hot sun and dry coastal winds, water gradually evaporates.
Crystallisation – As brine becomes concentrated, salt crystals begin to form on the pan surface.
Harvesting – Workers manually rake, collect, and heap the salt before it is sent for washing and packing.
Why This Region Produces So Much Salt
Climate Advantage – Jamnagar coast has long sunny days, scant rainfall and high evaporation rates – perfect for salt crystallisation.
Flat Coastline – The naturally level terrain near Okha, Mithapur and Bedi is ideal for building large salt pans.
Sea Water Quality – The salinity and mineral content of this coastline give good-quality salt, which is exported worldwide.
Economic & Ecological Importance
Jamnagar district is one of India’s top salt producers, supporting thousands of local “Agariya” workers.
Salt pans also create unique wetland habitats. Migratory birds like flamingos, painted storks and avocets often feed in these brackish flats, making them an unexpected bird-watching spot.
Challenges
While salt brings prosperity, it can cause salinity ingress into nearby farmland, affecting agriculture. Unseasonal rains can destroy entire salt harvests. Balancing industrial production with ecology is key to preserving this coastal treasure.
