Ernest Beesley (30th September 1917 - 20th November 2019) served in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. On the 17th June 1940, he was one of the 4000 - 9000 people that had crowded aboard the British liner: HMT Lancastria. Whilst anchored off Saint-Nazaire, the ship was critically damaged by German bombers and sank within 20 minutes.
Although the exact number of those died will probably never be known, the sinking of the Lancastria ranks as Britain's worst maritime disaster. Ernest's friend, Bert Bacon, survived by jumping into one of the few lifeboats that was successfully lowered from the ship. In total, 2,447 people survived the sinking.
