The chapter books and novels you read as a kid helped you learn English by giving you new vocabulary. They also reinforced grammar rules. These same books you enjoyed can be read again in your new target language for the same benefits.
I have read R.L. Stine's Goosebumps and Fear Street books to enhance my German reading comprehension. I enjoyed these books as a kid, and I have now read several of them again as an adult, this time in German.
Reading chapter books and novels will increase your vocabularly, give you some key turns of phrases, show you how sentences are constructed naturally in the language, and introduce you to idioms. They also have the benefit of being fun to read.
If you are at the level in your language learning where you have worked through a grammar book, or you have successfully read some newspaper articles, you are ready to take a stab at a book. Use your favorite bookstore or online retailer and find your favorite authors in your target language.
