"Navis is the leading terminal operating system company and more and more we are the leading terminal operating performance company, which means we’re providing, not only the software the implementation of the software that runs the whole terminal, but also services to tune and improve and optimize the terminal operations.

The major challenges the container terminals face from mega-vessels and mega-terminals is the drive for better efficiency and productivity. Today the size of a vessel is now 13,000-18,000 TEU and we’re hearing the vessels will go up to 24,000 TEU. The implications for the terminal operator is that they need to be more efficient and productive, and that means that they have to turn around the vessels faster and they have to move the containers through the terminal more quickly, so improve their throughput, and improve the truck turn time as well for the truckers who are picking up the containers, or the speed at which containers are loaded onto the rail.

To do that they need more software and Navis is the leading provider for terminal operating systems, and for optimizing the process, the business process, of moving those containers through the terminal. Apart from automation I think they are two areas that are required to increase the efficiencies of terminals that we’re seeing from our customers, one, is business intelligence. So, to have the ability to gather all the critical KPI’s that a tunnel would use to measure the performance of the terminal, and use that data to look for opportunities to improve the performance and the efficiency of the terminal, and combine that data together with other data from other systems so that they get an overview of the real time performance of a terminal. I think one of the lessons from the financial crisis has been that companies need much more information about their operations and the business processes and business intelligence provides visibility into the performance of those processes and enables an opportunity to find improvement. I think the other area, for the industry is going to be collaboration.

Navis is focused on optimizing the processes and operations within the container terminal, those operations can only be as successful as the data that’s coming in, so it’s very important that terminals work with ocean carriers on vessel stowage planning. The better the vessel stowage plan the more likely you can plan your cranes and your assets to discharge the containers from the vessel and improve the throughput of the containers through the terminals.

So, two areas are business intelligence and collaborative stowage planning with the ocean carriers. One of the critical areas that a terminal operator would look at is the cost per move and by using software, you’re seeking to reduce the total number of moves of containers and that helps reduce your costs and improve your operations but also move that box in a more efficient way by managing the vehicles and the equipment that are moving that box, saving fuel, or reducing wear and tear. At Navis we’re working closely with a number of leading terminal operators and other partners to develop the next generation of software to optimize and automate some of the leading terminals in the world. And what that means is we’re building a whole new framework on our platform that will enable new optimization capabilities this is a major project for that we’ve been working on for two and a half years and we’re looking forward to implementing this new next-generation of software in the coming months and this will really help provide a new level of efficiency for the terminal industry. So, we really believe the work we’re doing with our customers is going to be transformational."
