Pompeii was a lively Roman city near Naples, famous for its markets, baths, and colorful houses. In 79 AD, the volcano Mount Vesuvius suddenly erupted and covered the city with ash. The ash buried Pompeii so quickly that it preserved buildings, paintings, and even people exactly as they were at that moment.
Archaeologists found ancient graffiti on the walls, including jokes and political messages.
Some houses had beautiful mosaics and indoor gardens, showing that wealthy Romans lived there.
Bakers left loaves of bread in ovens, which were discovered almost perfectly preserved.
Scientists made plaster casts of the victims, revealing their final positions when the eruption happened.
Today, Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world and helps us understand daily life in ancient Rome almost 2,000 years ago.
