I don't name the force here, but having read their advice to promotion candidates, it's no wonder officers come to me confused and bewildered. And remember, this is the official written guidance to candidates... Follow it at your peril!

Police forces clearly don't mean to give bad advice, however it is inevitable when even the departments who write the guidance often don't really understand promotion, leadership, assessment and/or the CVF themselves. Be it convoluted explanations, contradictory advice, or simply setting up officers to potentially wing it & fail by saying 'don't practice your responses' - the range of bad advice is a minefield for aspiring officers. That doesn't even mention informal "advice" which might come from colleagues or others trying to help.

Here's an interesting example: This force "advises" that for the interview, you need not give ANY example experience of how you have demonstrated the competency. But according to their own prescribed marking scheme later in the pack, the interview assessors cannot possibly score you above 'below par' UNLESS you give AT LEAST ONE EXAMPLE experience of how you have demonstrated the competency!

Or how about the notion that national guidance puts Sergeants at CVF Level 2, except if you are seeking a Sergeant role in this force. Or if applying for Chief Inspector, they move away from the CVF competencies altogether.
