During the reign of Rajaraja the II, the mighty Chola empire had reached the beginning of its decline. But their architectural skills were still intact. Raja Raja the II was a patron of the arts. He commissioned the building of this temple. However, the spot on which the temple was to be built, was already considered sacred even during his era.
