Protect yourself from exploitation 👇
Get everything in writing. Email confirming scope, timeline, success metrics. Won't put it in writing? Red flag.
Document regular job responsibilities before taking stretch work. When they say "not performing," you have proof your actual job got deprioritized for their project 📝
Set clear timeline with checkpoints. "I'll do this for 90 days with review at 60." Open-ended becomes permanent unpaid promotion.
Track every additional hour and deliverable. Promotion time and they say "haven't proven yourself"? You have detailed record of what you delivered 🧏♀️
Ask explicitly: "If I complete this successfully, what specifically happens next?" Vague "visibility" or "growth" promises mean nothing.
Stretch assignments aren't bad - companies banking on your ambition for free labor are.
