Looking to the north from the middle of our light-polluted downtown suburbs 25 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts ...an ordinary 21st Century digital camera has cut through the noise to reveal a rotating parade of autumn stars. The dimmest recorded stars are no brighter than magnitude 6 ...roughly what unaided human vision might have seen around here 50 years ago.

Tech notes:
An 8K video (with a viewer's nose to the screen) might show more detail, but my PC is already maxed out making 4K videos, and a new PC is not on the horizon.
The exposure timing, field of view, and composition strategies are always a balancing act ...Longer exposures might resolve dimmer stars, but this would record star trails (moving stars as elongated blobs). A narrower field of view might record added detail (Andromeda Galaxy as more than a fuzzy dot, for example), but narrowing the field of view magnifies star motions and requires even shorter exposures times (with weaker details). I could buy a tracking mount to keep the stars from moving, but I could not record an all-night scene or any scene where the trees stay put.
