Pruning Tomato plants helps to keep focusing the energy of the plants on producing tomatoes rather than foliage. Prune also decreases insects and disease. You can always create more tomato plants by starting tomatoes form cuttings from the pruned stems or suckers.
Pruning tomatoes is not required. Many gardeners do not prune tomatoes. Tomatoes will continue to grow and produce if whether you prune them or not. Only prune indeterminant tomatoes. Indeterminant tomatoes will keep on growing and producing all season long. Do not prune determinant tomatoes and this will significantly reduce the yields. To prune tomatoes, pinch off or cut the suckers. Suckers grow between the main stem of the tomato plant and a branch similar to a shoot growing out of an armpit.
Benefit of pruning is to produce bigger tomatoes, allow adequate light penetration and airflow around plants, and keep plants healthy by reducing pests and disease
