Title: Marisa Monte Pt.2
Date: September 2000
Location: New York
In the words of the New York Times, Marisa Monte (pronounced Mareeza Monche) is a "pop star in Brazil, a cult in the US". Praise indeed, and with the recent completion of a thirteen-date sell-out US tour, her reputation as one of Brazil's hippest exports shows no sign of flagging.
APTN caught up with Monte during her recent show at New York's Beacon Theater. Her fans were full of praise for the raven haired singer from Rio, describing her as "magnificent", "charismatic", and "poetic".
As well as New York, Monte's US tour took in Los Angeles, Escondido, San Francisco, Washington, Boston and Miami.
Unsurprisingly, Brazilians make up the majority of her audiences, but many with no ties to Brazil came to experience Monte's unique blend of musical flavours. Monte puts the various styles of multicultural Rio, including samba, bossa nova, traditional jazz, African styles, classical music and world pop into her melting pot, and her live performances are characterised by her theatrical aplomb.
After the US tour, Monte completed a successful series of dates in major European cities including Madrid, Lisbon, London, Paris and the Macedonian capital of Skopje.
Monte is now back in Brazil, where she'll be performing in various cities throughout November and December. She doesn't plan to embark on any foreign tours until at least mid-2001, although there's a lot of pressure on her to schedule more shows.
"The musicians do not want to stop, the recording company do not want to stop, the tour managers do not want to stop, and also the public do not want us to stop", she says. "(But) then it's me who has to decide, for the show to continue being a challenge: something creative, good, pleasurable."
Monte has been on the road to promote her latest provocatively titled album, "Memories, Chronicles and Declarations of Love Proofs, Texts and Denials". It includes her latest hit song "Amore I Love You".
Monte's career started away from her homeland in Rome, where she studied classical music. She returned to Brazil determined to combine her new found knowledge with the music of her native country.
Her second record, "Mais", brought Monte to the attention of a the world. A huge hit in Brazil (where it went platinum), "Mais" was notable for its use of Arto Lindsay (the Brazilian-bred noise rocker of DNA) as producer, as well as the contributions of such eclectic sidemen as Nana Vasconcelos, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and John Zorn.
The success of "Mais" led to an international tour, including her first gigs in America and Europe and a triumphant performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Since "Mais", Monte has released two more records, 1994's "Rose and Charcoal", and arguably her best effort, 1996's "A Great Noise", both produced by Arto Lindsay. .
Unlike the current crop of Latino superstars who've courted international popularity by releasing records in English, notably RICKY MARTIN and ENRIQUE IGLESIAS, Monte has kept her focus fully on her Brazilian audience, and, despite pressure from her record company, has decided not to do English versions of her songs, branding that music industry tactic as "unartistic" and "commercial".
