Born in Venezuela but raised in British Columbia, Canada, Palmegiani was first selected by the Blue Jays in the 35th round of the 2018 Draft but chose to play at the College of Southern Nevada, where he improved his stock and was reselected by Toronto in the 14th round in ’21. After breaking out with 24 home runs in his first full pro season in ‘22, Palmegiani kept rolling in ‘23, hitting 23 home runs with an .842 OPS over 128 games between Double-A and Triple-A.
This has landed Palmegiani on the doorstep of the big leagues, right in the middle of a crowded depth group. Palmegiani’s power is real, and looking at his frame, it’s not difficult to see why. After giving the 6-foot athlete time at third and first base, the Blue Jays are eager to try him more in left field. If that experiment goes well, it opens plenty more doors, but even on the infield corners, Palmegiani has a path to the big leagues. He’s taken strides at third defensively, playing a much more solid brand of defense than when he was drafted, but his ticket will always be the bat.
Palmegiani has the potential to crush left-handed pitching, which showed in 2023 with a .949 OPS against lefties compared to an .806 mark against righties. That doesn’t point to him being a platoon player by any means, but as he tries to separate himself from Toronto’s upper-level infield depth, his ability to hit left-handed pitching could be the edge he needs. It’s easy to label Palmegiani as the ‘24 version of Davis Schneider -- a late-round pick who flies under the radar before bursting onto the scene -- and he could have the opportunity to play his way onto the roster this season. The same comment came back a half-dozen times with Palmegiani in camp this spring: “He’d be a fan favorite.”
