Captain Karnal Sher Khan was born on 1 January 1970 in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His name, "Karnal," is a localized version of the rank "Colonel," but he held the rank of Captain in the Pakistan Army. He initially joined the Pakistan Air Force as an airman in 1989 before being commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1994, serving in the 27th Sindh Regiment and later the 12th Northern Light Infantry.
Role in the Kargil War
During the 1999 Kargil War, Captain Sher Khan was deployed in the Gultari region, where he and his men established and defended five strategic posts at an altitude of 17,000 feet. Despite repeated and intense attacks by Indian forces, he led his troops with remarkable courage and tactical skill, often personally leading counterattacks to reclaim lost ground. On 5 July 1999, during a fierce battle at Tiger Hill, he was killed in action while leading a counterattack against Indian troops.
Recognition by Both Sides
Captain Sher Khan's bravery was acknowledged not only by Pakistan but also by the Indian Army. Indian Army Brigadier M.P.S. Bajwa, who commanded the Indian troops at Tiger Hill, was so impressed by Khan's valor that he wrote a citation praising his bravery and placed it in Khan's pocket when returning his body to Pakistani authorities. This act played a significant role in ensuring that Captain Sher Khan was posthumously awarded Pakistan's highest military honor, the Nishan-e-Haider.
The Battle at Tiger Hill
Accounts from Indian soldiers, including Vir Chakra awardee Satpal Singh of the 8 Sikh Regiment, detail the intensity of the combat. Singh, despite being wounded, engaged in a direct firefight with Captain Sher Khan and ultimately shot him during a close-quarters battle that lasted over five minutes. The Indian Army later recovered and returned Khan's body with military honors, further highlighting the mutual respect between adversaries for acts of exceptional gallantry.
Legacy
Captain Karnal Sher Khan is remembered in Pakistan as the "Lion of Kargil" and a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice. His actions during the Kargil conflict continue to inspire soldiers and civilians alike, and his martyrdom is commemorated annually by the Pakistan Armed Forces and the public. His story stands as a poignant reminder of the bravery and human cost of war, as well as the respect that true valor can command even from one's adversaries.
"Captain Karnal Sher Khan's heroism in the Kargil War etched his name in history with bravery, unshakeable commitment, and unwavering loyalty."
