The 5-4-3 rule is a design guideline for the early 10Base Ethernet networks where every host shares the backbones with repeaters used to connect different segments.
The 5-4-3 rule only applies to the early 10Base Ethernet where repeaters or hubs are used to connect different segments.
The rule does not apply to any Ethernet network with switches as central connecting devices.
