Night Theft Inside ESI Hospital Solved: Lift Operators Turned Out to Be the Thieves, 141 Kg of Copper Wire and Pipes Recovered
Delhi Police has cracked a major theft case involving copper wire and pipes stolen from the ESI Hospital premises in Basai Darapur, West Delhi. In a shocking revelation, the crime was not committed by an outside gang but by two lift operators working inside the hospital building. Police have arrested both accused and recovered approximately 141 kilograms of stolen copper wire and pipes.
The incident took place during the intervening night of May 27 and May 28, 2026. An air-conditioning installation project was underway on the sixth floor of the ESI Hospital, where a large quantity of copper wire and copper pipes had been stored. Taking advantage of the late-night hours, the thieves broke open the lock of the storage area and made away with the valuable material.
Following a complaint, a case was registered at Moti Nagar Police Station on May 30. Since the theft had occurred inside a hospital campus, police treated the matter seriously and launched an intensive investigation. A special team led by Inspector Pankaj Kumar, Inspector Sunil Kumar, and other officers began examining CCTV footage, conducting local inquiries, and gathering intelligence.
During the investigation, police received a crucial lead suggesting that some lift operators working in the hospital had easy access to the upper floors and were familiar with the location where the copper material was stored. Acting on this information, police called two suspects for questioning.
The accused were identified as Vikas (30), a resident of Tikri Kalan, Delhi, and Ritik (24), a resident of Nihal Vihar, Delhi. Initially, both denied any involvement in the crime. However, when confronted with evidence and subjected to sustained interrogation, they eventually confessed to the theft.
According to investigators, the two men had carefully observed the storage arrangements and knew that movement inside the hospital was minimal during late-night hours. Using this knowledge, they broke the lock, stole the copper wire and pipes, and later transported the stolen material to Kundli in Sonipat, Haryana, where it was concealed.
Based on their disclosures, police conducted a recovery operation and seized approximately 141 kilograms of stolen copper wire and pipes. The recovered material is believed to be worth several lakhs of rupees.
Police records indicate that neither Vikas nor Ritik had any previous criminal history. No earlier cases have been found against either accused so far. However, investigators are now examining whether the duo may have been involved in other similar thefts or whether additional accomplices were connected to the crime.
Delhi Police stated that further investigation is underway. The successful detection of the case has highlighted how individuals with inside access and knowledge can sometimes pose a greater security threat than outside criminals. The recovery of the stolen property and the arrest of both accused have been described as a significant achievement for the Moti Nagar Police team.
