Exploring the USS Spiegel Grove – A 510-Foot Underwater Giant
This dive takes you to one of the most iconic shipwrecks in the Florida Keys—the USS Spiegel Grove, a U.S. Navy Landing Ship Dock built in the 1950s and intentionally sunk in 2002 to become an artificial reef.
The story of the sinking is almost as legendary as the dive itself. The ship unexpectedly rolled over during the sinking operation, leaving the bow sticking out of the ocean like a ghost ship. For years it rested on its starboard side—until Hurricane Dennis in 2005 shocked the dive community by flipping the 510-ft wreck completely upright.
Today the Spiegel Grove sits in 60–130 ft of clear blue water, covered in marine life and towering like an underwater skyscraper. Divers can explore massive deck structures, crane arms, cargo bays, and long companionways along the exterior. With strong currents and deep exploration spots, this is an advanced dive that rewards you with huge schools of fish, coral growth, and incredible wide-angle GoPro footage.
Every descent onto this wreck feels like stepping into a piece of history now reclaimed by the ocean.
