Описание: On the bench today is a 1/64 scale Matchbox 1968 Ford Mustang GT California Special. It debuted in 2011 in the Heritage Classics series as MB812. From the 2011 Heritage Classics card we read: What better way to show up to the National Surf Championships than in your '68 Ford Mustang GT/CS? With its unmistakable Thunderbird taillights, fiberglass side-scoops and unique body stripes, there's no doubt where this pony's from, or who he's cheering for - California all the way, baby! Yes, it’s a nice looking car. Hard not to like a Mustang. I’m going to strip this one down, give it a colour change and new decal motif as well as a wheel swap. Grab a coffee and catch a wave with me. Surf’s up!

In mid-February 1968, the California Ford Dealers began to market a factory-built, limited-edition Mustang, called the GT/CS, or “California Special.” The hope was for a targeted production run of 5,000; however, only 4,118 were made, including 251 units that were remarketed in Denver, Colorado, as "High Country Special '68". Production ran for only five and a half months from mid-February 1968 to early August 1968. Today, classic car collectors consider these cars to be very desirable.

The marketing theme for this limited edition was "California Made it Happen!” - a variation on Mustang's national marketing theme and commercial jingle, "Only Mustang Makes it Happen!” This was all in response to the new pony car competition for the upcoming 1968 model year from the Camaro, Firebird, Javelin, and even from Ford's Torino and Mercury Cougar. The state of California, alone, was responsible for the sales of 20% of all Mustangs and Thunderbirds in the country, which gave the regional dealers there the clout to ask for and market their own Mustang. The objective was to make the Mustangs sold in California unique and to look "custom" made, thus differentiating them from the standard models available elsewhere.

The Mustang GT/CS features included: Marchal or Lucas Fog Lights, twist-type DZUS hood pins, side scoops, pop-open gas cap, rear spoiler decklid with end caps, and taillight panel with 1965 Thunderbird non sequential taillights.

Most of the specials produced had the small-block 289 two-barrel carburetor with C-4 automatic transmission. The GT option package was available on the GT/CS so some, but not all, GT/CSs are also GTs.

FYI: I don't collect, display or sell the cars, and they’re certainly not competition entries. All of the Maple Leaf Matchbox Makeovers finished projects that are kid-friendly are put in custom blister packs and go to my local Goodwill store where they are given to children for free. If there are parts that can be swallowed, those cars are given as gifts to adult collectors that are fellow enthusiasts.
