Описание: Rashid Minhas: Pakistan’s Youngest Nishan-e-Haider

Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas, born on 17th February 1951, remains one of Pakistan’s most revered national heroes and the youngest recipient of the Nishan-e-Haider, the country’s highest military gallantry award.

He stands out in history not only as the first officer of the Pakistan Air Force to be awarded this honour, but also as a symbol of loyalty and sacrifice. After receiving his early education in Karachi, Minhas joined the Pakistan Air Force Academy at Risalpur as a Flying Cadet at the age of 17.

On 14th March 1971, he was commissioned into the 51st General Duty Pilot course and soon after posted to the No. 2 Squadron at PAF Masroor Base in Mauripur, Karachi, where he began training as a fighter pilot.

On 20th August 1971, while still under training, Minhas was preparing for a routine solo flight in a T-33 trainer aircraft when one of his instructors, Flight Lieutenant Mati-ur-Rahman, attempted to hijack the plane.

Forcing his way into the rear cockpit after injuring Minhas, the instructor took control of the aircraft and began steering it towards India. Realising the betrayal, Minhas fought to regain command of the aircraft.

Despite his struggle, he could not overpower the hijacker and with only a few miles left before crossing into Indian territory, Minhas made the ultimate choice.

He deliberately crashed the aircraft just 32 miles short of the border, sacrificing his own life but preventing the plane from being taken out of Pakistan’s skies.

Rashid Minhas embraced martyrdom at the age of just 20. His act of supreme courage and loyalty preserved the honour of the nation at the cost of his own life.

He was laid to rest on 21st August 1971, with full military honours in Karachi, in the presence of his family, senior PAF officials and other military leaders. The following day, President General Yahya Khan announced that Rashid Minhas would be posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider.

To this day, he remains the youngest person to receive the award and the only officer of the Pakistan Air Force to have been honoured with it.

His memory is kept alive every year on his martyrdom anniversary and on Pakistan Air Force Day, where the nation pays tribute to his sacrifice and unmatched devotion to duty.
