With the test session at Indy complete & our first sponsor secured, it's time to get the 2012 Sprint Cup series season started. The first event isn't actually a points paying race, rather a set of duels that sets the starting lineup for the first race of the season, also NASCAR's biggest race, the Daytona 500. Unless you qualify 1st or 2nd and start on the front row, qualifying means nothing for this race. It just determines which of the 2 duels you'll be participating in and your starting spot for it. Get an odd number starting spot and you'll be in duel 1 to determine the starting lineup for the inside row. An even number starting spot means you're in duel 2 to determine the outside row. Each spot you gain or lose is one row closer or further from the front you start in the Daytona 500, so you obviously need to gain as much as possible. Winning your respective duel will guarantee you a 3rd or 4th place starting spot for the Daytona 500 if you didn't already qualify on the front row.
I want this season to be as challenging & fun as possible so difficulty will be on the highest setting at "Champion" for every race. For this specific event, the race length will be set at 20% the length of the real event since it's pretty short but all the regular points races will be on 10%. In conjunction with this, tire wear & fuel consumption will also be at the highest setting at x4 the normal rate so pitting will be necessary at least once. Cautions & black flags will both be on. So getting penalized for speeding on pit road or passing below the yellow line on restrictor plate tracks, which Daytona is one of, is possible. So we need to be careful & not do anything stupid, which I can be very prone of doing sometimes. Damage will also be on full, so getting a DNF from critical damage to the car is also possible so we need to keep the car clean, which is definitely not my biggest strength given my style of racing. I also won't be using custom setups in any race. I'm sticking strictly to default only with the exception of tire pressure, grill tape, spring rubber, and wedge/trackbar adjustments on pit stops. As long as we balance aggressiveness & smart driving well, we should have no problem winning the championship at the end of the season.
