Celery requires a long growing season, so start seeds indoors 12–14 weeks before your area’s last frost date. For Zone 5b, February is ideal. The seeds are tiny, so sprinkle them on a soil mix (e.g., coco coir and worm castings), lightly cover with coir, and keep moist. Once sprouted, thin or pot seedlings individually. Keeping them in medium pots until transplanting saves space.
By early May, transplant seedlings to their final spot. Celery thrives in semi-shaded areas, making it perfect for underutilized garden spaces. It also works well as a companion plant with beans, chamomile, cabbages, cucumbers, spinach, and tomatoes.
