Inveraray and District Pipe Band playing under the leadership of Pipe Major Stuart Liddell in Bathgate at the 2013 British Pipe Band Championships held in Meadow Park on 25 May 2013.
Music played:
March: Pipe Major J McWilliams (Donald MacLeod)
Strathspey: Bob of Fettercairn (traditional)
Reel: MacAllister's Dirk (traditional)
Pipe Major James McWilliams was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1938. Now retired, he has served in the Canadian army, played in and directed a number of bands. He is well known as a teacher, historian and author. He was friends with the late Donald MacLeod who wrote this march for him as a tribute in 1969 - an excellent, and unusual, choice for a band competition. Pipe Major McWilliams' birthday is on 31 May, so this performance may be a timely present.
Fettercairn is a village in the north east of Scotland near Laurencekirk. 'Bob' may not be a person's name, and the tune is known in folk circles as The Bob of Fettercairn. In Scots the word 'bob' has a variety of meanings. Here, it probably means a dance. Another little heard strathspey in competition.
This performance earned Inveraray & District third place in the Grade One competition.
