Günther Ramin gehört zu den bedeutenden deutschen Organisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Schüler von Karl Straube stand er in der großen Leipziger Tradition der Reger-Interpretation und wirkte später selbst zunächst als Thomasorganist und anschließend als Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Obwohl sein Ruf vor allem auf seiner Tätigkeit als Organist und Dirigent beruht, hinterließ er auch ein kleines, aber bemerkenswertes kompositorisches Œuvre für die Orgel.

Die Canzona con Fugato in e-Moll op. 8a gehört zu Ramins späteren Orgelwerken (das Werk dürfte um 1936 entstanden sein) und zeigt eine deutlich andere ästhetische Haltung als seine frühen, noch stark spätromantisch geprägten Stücke ebenso wie die etwas späteren, von der frühen Orgelbewegung beeinflussten Werke. Ramin wählt hier einen vergleichsweise modernistischen Ansatz. Das aus dem thematischen Material der Canzona abgeleitete Thema des Fugatos – in seiner sich aufspreizenden Gestalt wohl angelehnt an die Fuge in e-Moll BWV 548 von Johann Sebastian Bach – enthält elf Töne der chromatischen Skala ohne Wiederholungen und ist damit fast schon einer Zwölftonreihe angenähert.

Die Aufnahme entstand – trotz der eher neobarock gedachten Registrieranweisungen des Werkes – bewusst auf dem Sampleset einer spätromantischen Orgel (Furtwängler- und Hammer-Orgel des Kaiserdoms Königslutter). Diese Klangwahl orientiert sich an Ramins eigener Klangwelt: Bis zu seinem Tod spielte er, bei aller Faszination für barocke und neobarocke Instrumente, weiterhin häufig auf großen romantischen Orgeln, insbesondere auf der Sauer-Orgel der Leipziger Thomaskirche. Seine künstlerische Herkunft aus der Spätromantik hat er dabei nie verleugnet.

Günther Ramin (1898–1956) was one of the most important German organists of the 20th century. A pupil of Karl Straube, he stood in the great Leipzig tradition of Reger interpretation and later served himself first as organist and then as Thomaskantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Although his reputation today rests mainly on his work as an organist and conductor, he also left behind a small but remarkable body of compositions for the organ.

The Canzona con Fugato in E minor op. 8a belongs to Ramin’s later organ works (the piece was probably written around 1936) and reflects a noticeably different aesthetic compared both to his early works, which are still strongly rooted in late Romanticism, and to some of his later pieces influenced by the early organ reform movement. Here Ramin adopts a comparatively modernist approach. The theme of the Fugato, derived from the thematic material of the Canzona, contains eleven different pitches of the chromatic scale without repetition and therefore comes close to forming a twelve-tone row. In its expanding contour, the theme also seems to echo the fugue theme of Johann Sebastian Bach’s E minor Prelude and Fugue BWV 548.

Despite the rather neo-baroque registration indications in the score, this recording was intentionally made on a late Romantic organ. This choice reflects Ramin’s own sound world: throughout his life he continued to play frequently on large Romantic instruments, most notably the Sauer organ of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Even while showing great interest in baroque and neo-baroque organs, he never abandoned his artistic roots in the late Romantic tradition.
