Using Pool Filter Sand in Fish Aquarium

Pool filter sand is pretty and mostly white. $10 at home improvement stores, also same price and mt favorite look black diamond blasting sand medium grit. Wash all sand in a bucket until the water runs clear.

Question: How do you feel about sand for substrate? I have two spare 10s right now that have been sitting empty, I’ve always wanted to do a sand bottom but haven’t. I love sand, have it in my 10 gallon and 20 gallon. I find it much easier to clean as the poop and left over food sits at the top of the sand instead of mixing in between like it does with gravel. So all I have to do is stir up the top layer and siphon whatever gets stirred up

The sand for my 20 gallon was cheap, I got a 50 pound bag of play sand at home depot for 12 bucks and have had no issues with it, the tank is a year old. I have black aquarium sand in the 10 gallon which is 2 years old, again no issues. Black diamond sand works great as well, its a large amount for a very good price

Bettas aren't bothered by it, mine don't touch food once it hits the ground so as far as I know they aren't consuming any of it.

I really want to do sand, but for anyone in the comment section with experience, is sand easy to move with? I’m a college student and I have bettas and want to do a sand tank, but I have to take my fish home every summer.

Yes it is indeed! Get some pool filter sand and some root tabs if you wanna do live plants. $10 for pool filter sand at lowes and root tabs are $10 for 10. In a 10 gallon tank you'd have more than enough. When moving, just drain the tank and leave the substrate and bag up your betta and you're good to move. It'll be a bit heavy but you got it.

I move my tank back and forth with me every few months for school, and honestly sand is a lot easier than gravel. It’s easier to clean when in a dorm with no private bathroom too. Here’s my current tank.

I switched to sand a few weeks ago and it’s made cleaning the tank SO MUCH easier!! You just hover the vacuum over the sand and a small amount may be sucked up but it’s not a lot at all! And it made it so much easier for me to see uneaten food and poop.

I’ve used gravel, sand, dirt (for planted tanks) and I’ve concluded the best substrate is no substrate. I do bare bottom tanks now with some moss balls. Thinking if adding frog bit but not sure. All I know is, substrate is a pain to maintain.

I’m officially throwing in the towel on trying to properly cycle this tank. I am going on almost 3 months now, of trying to do a fishless cycle on my 9 gallon tank.. I have followed all of everyone advice to a T and did everything I could to make this work. I don’t understand why nothing is happening!?! All I have now is a super cloudy tank with a ton of film all over my decor that has been there for weeks, with no change. I know there are many of you that have done this successfully many times, but I guess my luck is just not it.

Just start adding fish. Assuming that your tap water is good to start and you use conditioner I would just go for it. I usually like to start small with bottom feeders and algae eaters first. Dose with seachem stability for 2 weeks per group of fish you add (so if you add more fish in 2 weeks later you start a new dosing session of stability) it’s a bacteria supplement so that plus fish equals quick cycle.
