Today is #SharkAwarenessDay Did you know that Stingrays at Caribbean Cove presented by SSM Health is home to bonnethead, brownbanded and white-spotted bamboo sharks?
Recently, an albino bamboo shark had a swelling on the left side of its face. After anesthetizing the patient, our veterinary staff took whole body radiographs and performed an ultrasound to help assess the cause of the swelling. The shark was placed on a table and a soft tube was placed in its mouth. The tube is connected to a circulating water source, which provided oxygen and an anesthetic agent to the patient as the water passed through its gills.
The swelling was diagnosed as a facial abscess. The abscess was opened, cleaned out and disinfected. During this time, the veterinary staff also collected blood for a CBC and biochemical profile and provided antibiotics and pain medications. The shark has recovered nicely and is back with the other sharks and stingrays in their 17,000 gallon home.
