Joe Loomis had known he wanted to study the brain since middle school. On a campus visit his senior year, he met chemistry professor Michael Johnson, who promised Loomis a spot in his lab the summer before his freshman year at KU.
Loomis joined Johnson for a new neural challenge: As cancer survivors lived longer, their memories and motor skills degraded, sometimes severely, through chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment, known as “chemo brain.”
Work in Johnson’s lab led Loomis to apply for — and receive — an Undergraduate Research Award (UGRA). Along with funding research into possible therapies, the UGRA and Johnson’s mentorship provided Loomis with assistance on writing and presenting research abstracts, important skills for any researcher.
Determination and firm goals led Loomis to a head start in the field of neurochemistry research — a story similar to those of countless ambitious students who looked into KU, then leapt into lives as Jayhawks.
