Making The Stuff and sharing a hack I learned for painting MDF is starting with a coat of Shellac. You can get this as a spray or in brush-on form. It helps coat your MDF, so paint can be applied to it, instead of absorbed by it. Without it you may find yourself needing multiple coats of paint, muted colors, bumpy finish, or paint that stays tacky and never dries.
