Atlanta may end up with its first non-African American mayor in 44 years. 12 candidates — including a white city councilwoman are vying for the job.
In 1973, Maynard Jackson was elected Atlanta's first black mayor. He campaigned against police brutality and equity in hiring practices. His affirmative action programs became the national standard in cities, especially those with Black majorities. He clashed bitterly with the white business establishment — but Jackson had made his intentions clear the day he was sworn in.
Robert Holmes, author of "Maynard Jackson: A Biography" joined Roland Martin on NewsOne Now to discuss the legacy of Mayor Jackson.
