This week, we take a look at Glendurgan Garden, a historic and beautifully designed valley garden near the Helford River in Cornwall.
Created in the 1820s–1830s by Alfred Fox (1794–1874), a member of the prominent Quaker Fox family who also created Trebah gardens located on the neighbouring property. The Fox family were shipping agents handling international mail through the port of Falmouth, Glendurgan and the land was originally developed as both a productive and ornamental garden. Alfred laid out the grounds for fruit and vegetable cultivation alongside sweeping landscape features — and introduced what has since become one of its most iconic attractions: the maze.
Built in 1833 to entertain family and friends, the Glendurgan maze was inspired by a much larger design in Sydney Gardens, Bath (UK). Its 706 metres of winding paths lead 374.5 metres to the centre, where a Chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) now stands in place of the original summerhouses in each quadrant.
