How many prayers go up to all the gods?
How many gods compete for all those prayers?
If there’s a mess on earth with prayer’s prayers
Imagine heaven’s muddled switchboard lines.
One prayer asks for victory in a war
Opponents ask the opposite instead
The same god must untangle all these webs
No wonder most wars end up in a draw.
Requests for health and riches never end
But riches gravitate to ever few
And health’s illusion always ends in death
Are gods just deaf or cruel, incompetent?
I think I’ll cut the gods a little break
No more prayers or petitions will I make.
