Cardiologist Cathy Glick, MD, has nothing but praise for the way Henry Ford Allegiance Health has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. She speaks not only as a physician, but also as a patient who is now fully recovered from the coronavirus.
Dr. Glick’s symptoms started on March 31 with shaking chills, a low fever and exhaustion. Concerned she might have contracted the coronavirus while caring for her patients, she scheduled a COVID-19 test.
As she suspected, her test results were positive. She did not have breathing issues or a high fever, so Dr. Glick was advised to self-quarantine at home. Over the next two weeks, she was too exhausted to get out of bed and was barely able to eat or drink. Then one night, she says, “I woke up spinning.” Feeling extremely dizzy, she asked her husband to call 9-1-1.
At the Henry Ford Allegiance Health Emergency Department, Dr. Glick received IV fluids to combat dehydration, but the dizziness could not be immediately controlled. She was admitted to an isolation room, where she stayed for five days. While her dizziness slowly improved, Dr. Glick’s exhaustion continued. “It felt like someone had taken my batteries out,” she recalls. “I wasn’t able to do much but sleep.”
Dr. Glick says she remembers the courage of those who cared for her. “I knew the staff had to be worried about being infected. None of us had faced a health crisis like this,” she says. “But they were so brave and trying so hard to put their own fears aside. They did an excellent job and were very kind.”
Dr. Glick urges everyone to continue to stay home as much as possible, wear a face mask in public, wash hands often and sanitize surfaces, including cell phones, door handles and power switches.
