After the creation of Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan issued a ten-rupee note in 1950. At that time, the value of money was such that a schoolteacher’s salary was 50 rupees, a police inspector earned 65 rupees, and most government employees received less than 100 rupees per month. A laborer’s daily wage was one rupee, and residential land could be bought for about 100 rupees per marla. At weddings, it was customary to give one or two rupees as a gift. Wheat cost 6 rupees per maund, gold was 60 rupees per tola, mutton was 2 rupees per kilogram, and the rent for an average house was 10 rupees per month.
